In his underground bunker, Ivan worked at a desk in a wide room filled with senior military and government officials. Three monitors ringed his computer station, while large monitors mounted high on the room’s front and side walls silently displayed updated information on the progress of the battles.

The war was off to a brilliant beginning. Russia and China had experienced only a few small setbacks in the critical opening hours of the attack.

His Chinese colleague, Major General Mao Wu Ying, had been replaced by an official Ivan had not previously met. However, the new officer seemed to be equally prepared, so it made little difference to Ivan.

The only explanation given for Major General Mao’s absence was that he had been feeling ill.

This was almost certainly a lie, but Ivan was not surprised. He’d expected Mao to be replaced after the discovery of Ms. Forester’s relationship with Mao’s son and the Spetsnaz officer. If Mao was truly feeling poorly, it was most likely because he’d been roughly interrogated by members of the Chinese Communist Party.
